Too much yarn

One thing that has remained steady over my crocheting career is my collection of yarns. I have a bad habit of starting projects and not finishing them. Several have been blankets and, until recently, my habit was to start them and run into a stumbling block. Then I would put it aside for a week or month or years…I recently went through my walk in bedroom closet and found several blankets. One of them was a beautiful piece of work in a cream colored yarn. I had no chance of completing it because I lost the pattern and have no clue about any other details. I unraveled it and was able to save the yarn to give away. That was a project I really liked and initially it was only the missing pattern keeping me from finishing it. I had another blanket I started using two strands of yarn and a large portion was intextricably tangled so that I had to throw it away. The rest of the yarn was saved but most of that was given away.

A few years ago I bought a pack of 20 yarn skeins from a local craft store and it still sits unopened. I probably should get rid of it and probably will. But it was gotten with ideas of making something, even though I don’t recall what. Then there are heaps of single skeins bought because they looked pretty but I can’t work out what to make with them. I had several fancy textured skeins with feathery bits on it. They looked pretty but recently I tried one out to see how I would work with it and found it maddening. So those have been given away too.

Last year at the height of my crochet frenzy, I got a mystery box order from Lion Brand yarn in the US. Included in that order was a skein of Pound of Love in straw color. I wasn’t sure what to do with it and when I visited the US late last year. I got three more colors to make a blanket. Except I didn’t know what to make. I started on one blanket and was going well until I wasn’t. Then I put it aside. Fortunately, I recently discovered a pattern I like and started anew. There are four blocks that are intact from the previous project but the troublesome one was undone and used. When and if I run out of the other colors, I will undo the blocks and use that yarn. So this yarn will get used.

I have become a lot better lately when visiting the yarn departments at stores. Most of the time I just look and don’t buy. Which is good. But occasionally temptation gets the better of me. At least I have been a lot steadier in my hobby in the last year. There’s a chance I might just use up some of my stash. And I might just give away or even sell some of it too.
